Although it might seem that citrus fruits would have an acidifying effect on the body, the citric acid they contain actually has an alkalinizing effect in the system.

Note that a food’s acid or alkaline forming tendency in the body has nothing to do with the actual pH of the food itself. For example, lemons are very acidic, however the end products they produce after digestion and assimilation are very alkaline so, lemons are alkaline forming in the body. Likewise, meat will test alkaline before digestion, but it leaves very acidic residue in the body so, like nearly all animal products, meat is very acid forming.

UNKNOWN:There are several versions of the Acidic and Alkaline Food chart to be found in different books and on the Internet. The following foods are sometimes attributed to the Acidic side of the chart and sometimes to the Alkaline side. Remember, you don’t need to adhere strictly to the Alkaline side of the chart, just make sure a good percentage of the foods you eat come from that side.

Test your pH.

If you are acidic, you must take massive action to alkalize.

How?
One of the easiest ways to monitor your pH (alkaline/acid) level is with a simple urine test.

You can get body pH strips at just about any health food store or supermarket health food section. First thing after waking urinate on a pH strip and just match the color on the chart. I do this about once a week.

Healthy urine pH should fall between
6.5 and 7.25.

This means that your body has plenty of alkalizing mineral reserves and it is processing acids effectively.

If your pH is 6.25 to 6.5, it means that your body is a little overwhelmed with excess acid. This is easily remedied by shifting your diet slightly toward more alkaline forming foods.

If your urine pH is 5.75 to 6.0, your body is holding onto a lot more acid than it should. Your mineral reserves are being depleted.

And if your pH registers at 4.0 to 5.5, your body is crying out for help.

If you are acidic, then 80-100% of your meals should be alkaline forming foods. Once you reach a healthy pH, 50-80% of your meals should be alkaline forming foods in order to maintain. See the charts below.

Warning: There are rare cases where your pH level is in the healthy range, but you are not eating healthy and you are not eating 50-80% alkaline forming foods.

This is probably due to one of two things:
1. Medication that is changing your pH
2. Your body is in emergency mode and is holding on to every ounce of fat and water it can to deal with your pH imbalance.
